Overcoming boredom While Drum Exercises

| comments (2)

One of the problems that will be faced by all the drummers are feeling tired during practice. In the early years, there are several reasons why we may feel bored.
First of all, exercise for beginners requires dedication because it is so elementary. In this level, maintaining the interest becomes a difficult thing. But students who successfully completed the first year of learning means have passed the toughest part. Hardest things to remain enthusiastic. Fortunately, for most of us, youthful passion and help us through the first part.

The next problem usually occurs when the student has developed enough to play the rudiment and basic pattern with a certain skill level. At this point, training and the same pattern can become very monotonous. Although repetition is important for the development of skills, strength, and control, this activity could also be negative. Repetition can be so boring, so loosen the student's determination and interest evaporate.
To overcome this, the student should be exposed to challenging material. Although there are parts that need to be trained many times, but the spirit can be maintained if we always have something new as training material. In this way, repetition of skills developed and mind constantly stimulated with new ideas and materials. This is a nice balance.

1.     The only musical instrument of the most rapidly eliminates stress.

2.     The only instrument that remains despite the lights off.

3.     Not had time to jog? Play drums for 20 minutes non-stop (the spirit)!

4.     By looking at his drums alone one can know the band will perform.

5.     If there are no drums on stage so people assume that there is no band.

6.     Musical instruments that can best reflect the nature of a person (in view of the game and his drum setup).

7.     Musical instruments are most attractive. People prefer to see the drummer than guitar player, bass keyboard, etc. (sorry). (Sssstt. guitarist  ... even admit it):)

8.     A musical instrument that can train the whole body coordination.

9.     If there are no drums, the song being played will not be felt

10. The drum is a musical instrument in the most fun to play.

10 Essential tips for drummers

| comments

  1. Always use the EAR PLUG (earplugs) to protect the ears from damage, and always use in training and performing. Now many drummers who have the disease tinnitus (ear buzzing) and until now there is still no cure.Spare your hearing.
  2. Get used to using the metronome tempo every time practicing so that you always stable.
  3. Play with RELAX, do not be tense and do not waste energy, there is no point.
  4. Always prepare STICK own more than one pair if you want to perform.
  5. Do not be too easily satisfied with the knowledge that you can. Try adding more knowledge by learning from the teacher of a different drummer or a more experienced friend.
  6. Do not be too fanatic on one or two genres of songs alone, it is this which can inhibit creativity and make your game the player becomes monotonous and boring. Try a variety of musical genres and try you can play the entire flow of the music.
  7. In the game should involve FEEL drum or in other words, should really felt, must not hit and do not ever think that the louder the better punches. That's wrong! And also do not think that the faster you play the more intense. Not really, violence and speed has nothing to do with musicality.
  8. Always practice of TEMPO is slow and if you are very familiar, increase the tempo slowly. You have to learn to walk first and then get away.
  9. LISTEN to the other musicians, do not just focus on yourself, listen to others.
  10. Be a CREATIVE drummer, give variation on every game that you can drum. Because the drum is still something 'new', there are many new variations that you can get.

Note: For EAR PLUG pharmacy you can buy it in large or in a store that sells military equipment. For each store musi metronome there, and look for a digital.

Drum Setup

Standard Setup

This is the usual drum setup and most frequently used, you ever think to try a new setup? Here are some ideas to modify your setup without buying additional accessories *. Look for one that fits you so it feels comfortable to play and to inspire you.
* If your drum Pearl

Setup ergonomics

The above setup is ergonomic setup. Using this setup, your hands will not get tired quickly when the play the ride cymbal, ride cymbal because it can be brought closer to you and under, you also can play the ride without complaint your hands sore.
Both tom-tom snares pass directly in front so you can easily reach both.
Using a setup like this is Budi Haryono (Gigi) and Ronald (Dr PM) as well as my own, Denny.
I set up like this, namely:
  • Put in place measures 13 tom toms 12 regular placed. (Tom 12 released)
  • Unplug the top cymbal boom stand (left foot) and put the top of the boom stand in place of usual tom-tom 13 is placed and find the most comfortable position
  • Use foot boom stand had to fine tune the tom-tom 12. And place as the picture above.
  • It is recommended that you use Pearl drums, if you are not a Pearl drum then to install the tom-tom 12 adapter is needed which is then clipped on the left cymbal stand.

Setup jazz

Now the tom-tom 13 foot boom mounted on the stand and placed parallel to the floor tom 16 (try to put tom 13 as low as possible and align with the floor tom 16 ").

Setup rock

Setup is just moving rock that use tom 13 foot boom stand to the left side (next to the hihat) so you have a floor tom on the left and right. With the floor tom has a frame on the left, you will be able to make Patter-interesting pattern that you've never done before. Chad Gracey (Live drummer) using a setup like this.

Rimshot

| comments

There are still many new drummers; even long playing drums beating do not know rimshot.

One day when I became one of the assessment team at the time of audition drum festival (music) in 2000, I saw 2 or 3 people playing with a drummer who was hit hard, but why the sound of his snare still no sound (sound and all, but sound slow and not sharp). And it seems he tried to hit hard the snare to be heard, but in vain. Then I saw that she was not using the technique Rimshot on his snare so that his voice was low and not sharp.
Many drummers are hard to find a good snare sound, to the extent that they replace the head, to tune the snare with different tension and even there is also to buy a new snare. They do not know the key to get the snare sound is sharp and nice ... that is Rimshot!
Actually it would not hurt you are not using a rimshot. Hitting techniques commonly used in country songs, pop. But if you play rock, fusion, funk, Latin, jazz and metal you need is you RIMSHOT!

This is the usual punch. End of the stick only hit the drumhead course, the resulting sound is less focused, especially if hit hard and fast the drumhead will be concave.

This is a blow Rimshot. Stick on the drumhead and the rim on the snare at the same time, so the resulting sound loud, full and sharp, with a blow like this then the drumhead, rim and the shell will be 'silent' so much character snare drum sounds. Get used to play using this technique. This technique is a must if you want to record. So, make it a habit to use this technique on every song that you played.

How to hold the stick and the position of the foot on the pedal

| comments

There are two ways of holding the stick:
1. Matched grip (see figure I)
2. Traditional grip (see figure II)

Matched grip having two holding different ways:

A. Closed hand / closed hand punches which rely heavily on the arm and wrist so that the blows became stiff and tired hands, speed was very limited.
B. Open hand / open hand where the thumb and forefinger are used to clamp the stick, while the three other fingers like a middle finger, ring finger and little finger play to push the stick. When the stick is pushed to touch drumhead, it will automatically stick will bounce back, use reflection to make the next shot (the third finger stick was pushed back). Do it repeatedly, as if she just dribble a basketball.

Traditional grip
The difference this grip is on the left hand, which clipped the stick is placed between the thumb and middle finger and ring finger. Thumb whose role is to encourage the stick. As for the right-hand how to hold it there is no difference, as it matched grip Traditional grip is harder to do than matched grip because it controls the left hand is much more complicated.

Beginning of the Traditional Grip
Traditional way of holding the stick is first used, starting from the year 1600.Actually, traditional grip is required for marching band drummer at that time where they put the snare drum by way tie (like bags) and the rope looped dibahu, so that the snare drum position tilted to the right. Because of its position skewed to the right, then left hand using a different grip with his right hand in order to achieve the snare drum (left hand like holding a pencil, but the stick is placed between two pairs of fingers and clipped to the thumb).
1840 the newly discovered drumset (snare, bass and tom-tom) where three drums played by one person. Because the traditional grip is a hereditary habit that originated from marching, then the traditional grip is also used on drumset. Then again, this habit continues to end in mid-1960, Ringo Starr (drummer of The Beatles) took a step forward by holding the stick at the same position (left hand as right hand), so as a person who holds two hammers. Who then called matched grip. It turned out that by using the matched grip so easily drummer can remove the power / energy is desirable and also a blow on his left hand became more accurate.
And finally they both can be used in accordance with the flow of the song and tastes drummer, to the tune that is soft and requires a touch, then the traditional griplah who 'spoke', while to play a groove / beat a solid and more modern songs (rock), matched grip the most suitable.

Pedal
How to pedal there are two kinds:
1. Heel down (see picture A)
2. Heel up (see picture B)

Both the position of the foot may be done in accordance with the flow of songs and drum players tastes. If you are a player of jazz (swing, jazz pop) then heel down is the right choice, but if you are a player or a fusion of rock and funk then heel up is required to create a more solid groove because of the speed and leg strength will increase.
Heel down is relying on the ankle to hit. So, you do not expect to obtain a hard blow to this position, just a waste of effort.
Heel-toe up using for the pedal so that all personnel can be deployed. To get more speed at the heel up, the position was reversed so that when the foot pedal (when the foot pedal not arrested but were released), then the pedal will return to its original position because it is pulled by a spring and you just stepped on it again to hit.

What's Drum ?

| comments

Drum is actually mixed. There is a snare, tom-toms, bass, conga, tymbal, mondo, drum, tabla ... etc., they are essentially the drum, because the play by being hit. But we are discussing is the drumset, which is arguably the most modern form of drums. Drumset itself actually consists of three drums, the snare, tom-toms and bass drums. For tom-toms still be divided into two more, namely: Mounted tom and floor tom-tom (depending on the placement and diameter only). Of the three elements are still there are some important elements, namely cymbals, hardware (pedal, hihat stand, cymbal stand, snare stand, tom holder / tom stand) and the drumhead.

Toms consist of various sizes in both depth and diameter. The size of a 12x10 drum bias written that the point is its depth 12 inches and 10 inches in diameter. Tom-tom diameter varies, usually the small tom-tom diameter 6 ", and continues to 8", 10 ", 12", 13 ", 14", 15 ", 16", 18 "and 20".Size of the tom-tom 14 "and above can be classified as a floor tom-tom, but depending on the placement as well. Tom-tom using 2 drumhead, top and bottom, except in the 70's where tom and bass drum drumhead using only one course, and his voice was awful. Agency tom-tom or commonly called a shell made of wood. To drum beginner classes usually using Mahogany wood and for the professional classes typically use Birch and Maple wood. Birch and Maple Wood is more expensive because it produces a sound or tone round and clear. Wood on tom-toms usually have a thickness of 4 to 10 mm. The thinner the wood then the resulting sound richer and sensitive. While the thick wood produced louder voice, but his voice is not too rich and less sensitive.
Bass drums are not too different from the tom-toms, bass drum only has a larger diameter, 16 ", 18", 20 ", 22", 24 "and even 26" or more. And bass drum beaten with the pedal and put under. But it does not sound like a bass drum tom-tom-voiced "Dung ..." but it tends to sound "Dug ..." (More dead voice). Wood bass drum tends to be thick to produce a louder voice and drum durability for itself.
Snare drum are the most different among the other (of the form and voice). And snare drum are the main elements of the drumset (which most often beaten). These drums are usually sized 10 "to 15", but the most commonly used is the size of 14 ". What makes a difference on the snare drum that is at the bottom of the drum. Beneath it uses wires that spiral or actually called Snare Wire / Strainer . It's what makes the difference on the snare drum. If you hit it then head under the wire snare immediately responded, by way of 'hitting' head back down and produces a sharp sound. Therefore, the actual 'life' of the snare drum is located on the snare wirenya. If the snare wirenya removed then the resulting sound is almost the same as the tom-tom.
Cymbal, again is a 'life' for the drumset, because it is almost impossible to play drums without cymbals (is like eating rice without rice, do not eat donk ...). Cymbals consist of four types of them are:

  1. Hihat cymbal:
'Heart' cymbals and drums. Useful to keep time / tempo. consists of a pair of cymbals. size 8 "to 15". Standard size 14 "
  2. Ride cymbal:
Each function with hihat but with different shapes and sounds. Consists of only one cymbal but the large 18 "to 22". standard size 20 "
  3. Crash cymbal:
Useful to give the phrase / tone in a song. Measuring 13 "to 22" depending on the tastes of players.
  4. Effects cymbal:
The effect consists of Splash cymbal, bell, china and swiss. Useful to provide 'color' special on a song. Splash and bell typically measuring 6 "to 12" and for china and swiss usually measuring 16 "to 22".

Hardware consists of a variety of forms and functions:

  1. Pedal:
Useful for hitting the bass drum, double pedal is also available, namely the pedal that uses 2 pedals and 2 hitter or a beater to get better sound on the bass drum.
  2. Hihat stand:
To put the hihat cymbal is made up of 2 pieces cymbal so you can open and close the two cymbals with your left foot.
  3. Cymbal stand:
To place any kind of exception hihat cymbals.
  4. Snare stand:
To place a Snare drum and you can change position at will.
  5. Tom holder / tom stand:
    Useful to install the tom-tom.
Drumhead has the size, type, function and different thicknesses. Drumhead consists of three parts: First Batter head, drumhead that is specifically designed to hit. Second, Resonant only placed at the bottom of tom-toms and the front of the bass drum. Head is not to hit, the head is useful to give 'live' on tom-toms and bass drums. And the last is the snare side, solely to put the bottom of the snare to get the snare sound wirenya. Snare side is the head of the most thin.Remember, not to hit.
